Dear Rotarians
Dear Rotaractors
Several weeks have passed since the disaster in Crans-Montana. However, for those affected and their loved ones, the state of emergency is far from over. Many challenges remain, as does the need for reliable support.
In the days immediately following the fire, the Rotary family in Switzerland acted quickly and in a coordinated manner. Accommodation was organised for relatives, practical assistance was provided on site and contacts were gathered. At the same time, a fundraising campaign was launched for the Rotary Foundation Switzerland. Thanks to the tremendous solidarity of clubs and Rotarians, more than 100,000 Swiss francs have already been raised.
This support is essential and will continue to be needed. Many of the injured will require medical care for weeks or even months. Relatives are travelling from abroad, staying in Switzerland for long periods, and organising care, accommodation, and support. During this time, they are unable to work in their home countries, their day-to-day obligations remain unchanged, and they incur additional costs. Not all of these expenses are covered by insurance or public authorities: some benefits are paid late, while others only cover part of the costs.
It is important for us to be clear on this point: donations are used exclusively and in full for measures related to Crans-Montana. They are used where existing systems reach their limits, whether in terms of time, organisation or human resources. Rotary does not replace the responsibility of the state or insurance benefits. The aid is complementary and targeted.
The use of funds is decided by a committee composed of the three of us, the current governors, the president of the Rotary Foundation Switzerland and the president of RC Crans-Montana. The use of funds is strictly in accordance with the foundation's rules. Rotary works closely with the relevant authorities and institutions to identify cases requiring assistance.
In addition to financial support, assistance is also provided where the difficulties are less visible. This includes, for example, psychological support for firefighters who have worked in extremely difficult conditions and whose stress often only becomes apparent after the event.
Crans-Montana clearly shows that support does not end with the acute phase of an event. Rotary can contribute in this area in a coordinated and responsible manner that complements existing structures.
We thank all those who have already committed themselves.
And we ask you to continue to accompany us on this path.
With our sincere Rotarian regards.
