Empowerment in Rotary

Dear Rotarians,
Dear Rotaractors

The famous Four-Way Test does not explicitly mention empowerment. So, is empowerment something we can or should have in Rotary? Or is it simply a modern buzzword borrowed from the business world?

During my club visits, one of the main questions – perhaps the main one – has been how to engage new members. Very often, new members are welcomed with great enthusiasm: photos are taken, smiles abound during the lunch meeting, and everyone is delighted. A few months later, the new member presents his or her family, profession, hobbies, and passions. Again, the atmosphere is warm, and many kind words are shared.

But what happens after that? Too often, not much.

Every active person has a natural desire to contribute to the activities they are part of. We all seek action, success, and recognition. This is especially true for younger Rotarians, who are typically energetic and full of ideas. For them, standing still is not an option. If Rotary cannot provide meaningful opportunities for involvement, something else will. There are always alternatives competing for their time and passion.

In club life, empowerment means engaging members in projects. There is no reason for the club president to carry the workload alone, nor for the same small group to organize the annual project year after year. We must have the courage to invite all members to take an active part in club work. Above all, we must give responsibilities – we must empower – especially our new members.

Empowerment is actually more than delegation: it is the glue that strengthens relationships among members and the fastest way to reinforce the DNA of the club.

And finally, I realized that empowerment is in the Four-Way Test. It is not spelled out, but it is there, written between the lines, in its spirit.

I invite all club presidents: empower your members – and together, make your clubs vibrant and strong.

I would like to remind you, that I will welcome you all to Rotary D1990 UNI 2025, which will take place on November 8 at EHL in Lausanne. The Rotary Club of Jorat is hosting this major event – a unique opportunity and an important learning experience for all Rotarians in our District.
